Fruit season, Chile: guaranteed supply and demand, but logistics must be guaranteed

Cherry is the most prominent product and China is still the main buyer

"Cherry is the star product to lead Chile's exports. The grape is in the process of changes, but its sale is assured and exports of nuts has increased in volume and value by 34%”, Said the President of the Federation of Fruit Producers of Chile, Fedefruta, Jorge Valenzuela a Maritime World.

The representative of the Chilean fruit producers made an exposition at the Folovap session No. 144 in order to publicize the fruit export situation, evaluate the results of 2019 and refer to the expectations for the 2020.

The businessman indicated that the evaluation is positive this year and that China is still the main buyer of the sector for 2020. "We have the fruits, the buyers; we just have to work in a coordinated way so that the logistics work optimally".

Jorge Valenzuela, in addition to thanking the management of the ports, Livestock and Customs Agricultural Service for port operation and exports in the current context of the country, indicated that for Fedefruta, which is formed by 27 trade associations, "the big concern is the logistics issue".

He added that "We are making every effort to keep the job in a normal way. We have not stopped and the social crisis in the countryside has not affected so strongly. We are doing the job", he pointed.

From the point of view of Fedefruta, the 2019 evaluation has been positive especially for the role of the cherry, highlighting that it is of the taste of the consumers of China, for it emphasized that “you have to take care of it and protect it. She has been the ambassador of fruit in foreign trade and has helped attract investment. It has served to position other products. No one knows how long it will last so you have to take care of this fruit", he pointed.

On the other hand, there was a decrease in the export of fresh fruit by 4,8% in volume and 1,2% in value. The UVA is in the process of reconversion because there are 37 varieties. "Many are linked to particular genetic programs. Conversion down the costs a bit, but it is changing worldwide anyway"He said.

However, he stressed that for the purposes of the 2020 projection, Jorge Valenzuela said that the blueberry is very important in Chile, and although at the moment the social situation still allows us to maintain good omens for the export logistics process in general, "there are investment funds that have emigrated to Peru and Colombia very quickly", he pointed.

The drought is here to stay

It should be noted that the president of Fedefruta emphasized the impact that the drought is having on production. "It is as much or more serious than the social situation. It is an issue that we have long noticed. It can be catastrophic. Lack of investment and vision and we see that there is a lot of noise and few nuts. We have told the ministers. This is a social crisis in the countryside that comes from the hand of water"He warns.

In this regard, he said that “Without water there is no agriculture and if this situation continues, 2020 could affect the size of the fruits. Let's not forget that fruits are almost 90% water"He said.

He added that Fedefruta conducted a survey and among the conclusions highlights that “We get to receive 365 responses linked to our field that has been described as “delicate and unsustainable. The most affected could be grapes, in the Fourth and Fifth region and elsewhere, pears and apples. If this continues, we would have to sacrifice that kind of products, for others that have higher profitability.", He finally pointed out.
