Peru adds Egypt as a destination for its blueberry exports

Phytosanitary access was confirmed by the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation after more than a year of negotiations between SENASA and the Egyptian authorities. This opening adds a new option for Peruvian exports to a market that is also developing its own blueberry industry.

El blueberry Fresh Peruvian produce will be able to enter Egypt following the official opening of that market, achieved through technical negotiations between the National Agrarian Health Service (SENASA) and the Egyptian phytosanitary authority. With this authorization, Peru now has 76 international markets open to its fruit.

The addition of Egypt expands the portfolio of destinations for an industry seeking to distribute a growing supply. Its commercial development will now depend on the ability to generate buyers, sustain operations, and build effective demand.

More than a year of phytosanitary management

The access is the result of more than a year of bilateral negotiations between SENASA and the Central Administration of Plant Quarantine of Egypt, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation.

Egypt has a population of approximately 120 million. The opening allows for the commercial development of this market, although its population size alone does not determine the potential demand. blueberry Peruvian.

This is further enhanced by its own production dynamics. The IBO Global Blueberry Report 2026 estimates that Egypt produced around 2.100 tons in 2025 and notes that a significant portion of the locally grown fruit is destined for export.

most recent data from Blueberry World Analytics, by Blueberries ConsultingData shows that between January and June 2026, Egypt exported 4.902 tons of blueberries, with 77,06% of that volume destined for the Netherlands. While still small compared to major global producers, this indicates a growing local industry and an expanding export presence.

Egypt thus combines its status as a new market for Peru with a developing local supply and established trade links with Europe. This context should be considered when assessing the potential market share for Peruvian fruit.

A supply still concentrated in large markets

For Peru, this opening is especially significant because its blueberry exports are still concentrated in a few main markets. The United States remains the leading buyer, while the Netherlands continues to play a key role as a gateway to Europe, and the United Kingdom remains among the most important destinations.

Expanding the number of open markets provides more options for placing an output that has increased in recent years. However, effective diversification depends not only on phytosanitary access but also on the capacity to develop sustained trade programs.

Egypt offers an alternative that was previously unavailable to Peruvian industry. The challenge will be to translate this authorization into effective trade and to gauge the potential impact of this destination on Peru's export strategy. blueberry Peruvian.
