Morocco: Chtoukam, the seawater desalination plant for irrigation is in operation

The Minister of Agriculture, Marine Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests, Mr. Mohammed Sadiki, on Thursday, January 27, 2022, made a field visit to the province of Chtouka Ait-Baha in the Souss-Massa region to visit various projects carried out abroad in the region.

At the level of the territorial municipality of Inchaden, the Minister inquired about the progress of the installation works of the Chtouka perimeter irrigation networks programmed within the framework of the seawater desalination project for the irrigation of the Chtouka perimeter and the water drinkable, supply of Greater Agadir. He also discussed the progress of the project's desalination station.

Thus we have been able to learn from a reliable source that the Chtouka desalination plant officially came into service this Saturday just after the visit made on Thursday by the Minister of Agriculture, Marine Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests, Mohammed Sadiki, and now supplies the Great Agadir with drinking water.

The project will ensure the irrigation of 15.000 ha in the Chtouka plain through the desalination of seawater as a substitute for groundwater and will benefit 1.500 farms. These installations will also eventually make it possible to produce 400.000 m3/day of desalinated water, divided equally between drinking water and irrigation water, thus contributing to the preservation of agricultural activity in the region, particularly high-power crops.

It should be noted that the progress rate of the irrigation network is 90,3%. This rate is 98,5% for desalination works.
