Chilean fruits dominated import market in Bolivia in 2017

Bolivia invested US $ 21,4 million in the import of fruits during the past year, according to the report presented this Friday by the Bolivian Foreign Trade Institute (IBCE) in collaboration with the National Institute of Statistics (INE)

Of the figure, 52% (that is, US $ 12,5 million) corresponded to products from Chile. Among the items most in demand in the Bolivian market are cranberries, apples, pears, kiwis, melons and grapes.

Other countries are listed in the IBCE, but with much lower earnings compared to the Chilean ones. For example, Argentina only managed to position 36% of the total fruit sales of 2017, while Peru took 5% of the profit of that period.

The popularity of imported fruits in Bolivia, is due, according to studies of national markets, to the inhabitants of that country consider that they look better, are sweeter and their duration is longer.

Less purchase

Bolivia has made significant expenditures in the purchase of fruit products from neighboring countries in recent years. However, the Bolivian Foreign Trade Institute highlights the fall in these investments.

The agency states in its most recent summary that 2015 was the period in which Bolivia spent the most money with a figure that exceeds US $ 23 million.

Although the numbers are lower and mentioned in the document, the IBCE does not analyze why it is evaluated as "positive" or "negative".
