These are the 3 challenges facing agriculture and this is how technology can tackle them

During the EF Agro Forum, the director of Bayer Crop Science Mexico, Manuel Bravo, explained what are the adversities that farmers will face in the coming years.

In the next 35 years, the agriculture worldwide It will be necessary to double the amount of food that is currently produced and before that this sector will face great challenges.

Manuel Bravo, director of Bayer Crop Science Mexico, considered this Tuesday during the third edition of the EF Agro Forum, that the agricultural sector will face three major challenges, which can be faced through new technologies.

The first one is the lack of water. According to the International Institute for Water Management, about 70 percent of all liquid worldwide is used for agriculture, and in 2030, of every 100 liters that are demanded there will only be 40 available.

This problem can be faced with the use of new seed varieties resistant to drought and through the use of satellite photos. These technologies allow, explained, save water and detect when a crop needs this

The second challenge that agriculture will face is the waste of food.

In Mexico, about 40 percent of the food is wasted during the harvest stage. The blockchain, the chain of blocks that gave rise to bitcoin, it could be the solution, because through this system it is possible to follow up the production chains from the crop until the products reach the consumption centers.

Another challenge that agriculture will face is the migration. According to data from the World Bank, 143 millions of people will have to migrate from their lands due to the effect of climate change.

Most of them, said the manager of Bayer, will be small producers.

The latter can be avoided, he said, by working with small farmers through the democratization of technologies, such as artificial intelligence and improved seeds.
