Irrigation Transfer Center of Coquimbo seeks to become a technological reference

The scientific work of the Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA) of Coquimbo achieved the development of the Technology Transfer Center in Irrigation and Sustainable Agriculture, which makes it a point of reference for farmers and professionals throughout Chile.

Edgardo Díaz, regional director of INIA, was convinced that both the investments and the work carried out in the so-called "experimental plot" will make the transfer center a benchmark for farmers, technicians and professionals in the nation.

“The success of this demonstration center lies not only in the technology present here, but also in the excellent work carried out by our INIA professionals, especially in the research and subsequent transfer of this knowledge, which is done in a very practical and significant," Diaz said.

According to the representative of INIA, the state-of-the-art technology of this irrigation system is what allows it to schedule shifts through mobile equipment, without the need to be in the field when the crop deserves it.

Recognition

One of the first to react to the project was Rodrigo Ordenes, a member of the Seremi of the Ministry of Agriculture. The official assured that "irrigation and agriculture must be sustainable, this due to the causes and effects of climate change, which has had a negative impact on the productive development of the regional agricultural sector."

Ordenes hopes that the experience will become the first step to take the knowledge to other instances, so that more and more farmers have these techniques at hand and can be used in any part of the country. "As the Ministry of Agriculture, we value the tremendous effort made by INIA to incorporate new technologies and make them available for the benefit of farmers," Ordenes mentioned.
