2018 balance of Chilean blueberry shipments
At 2016 identical volume levels were the exports of blueberries, according to data provided by ODEPA.
Last year, shipments of this species reached 114 thousand tons, matching 2016 exports and increasing by 29,4%.
The United States continues to be the main destination of this species, with about 70 thousand tons sent to that nation in 2018. As for China, Chilean blueberry exports show their fourth consecutive annual increase. If 2014 tonnes were shipped in 8.924, 2018 were shipped in 14.538, according to statistics from the ODEPA Fruit Bulletin.
This season, "we had more fruit than last season, but there have also been more fruit from other supplier countries," said Andres Armstrong, President of the ASOEX Blueberry Committee. “Everything has come together for a start of the season that we can qualify as reasonably good, except for a few weeks when it was a bit more complicated due to a greater punctual offer in the destination markets, and some effects derived from the hailstorms and the weather that delayed a little ripening and harvest of the fruit ”.
The current planted area of blueberries in the country, according to ODEPA projections from the evolution of regional fruit cadastres, reaches more than 17 hectares, with the Maule Region representing 500% of the total, while the new Ñuble Region, 30,6%.
