Agricultural sector will be key for the economic development of the new Region of Ñuble

On September 6, the Sixteenth Region of Ñuble enters into force. This new administrative area of the country will be the smallest of all with one of the highest poverty rates (20,9% in 2015) also one of the oldest and with a productivity per worker that is around 540 UF per year.

Ñuble joins 21 communes that will make up this new region that is mainly agricultural. Three months from now, there are technical challenges, especially in their economic and social development.

Private Investments

With the high levels of unemployment, the flight of talent and the poverty that will lodge the region, the role of the private sector will be preponderant in the development of Ñuble. This is what Martin Arrau sees, the presidential delegate in charge of setting up the new region.

Although it is not part of its mission, Arrau has been concerned to dialogue with entrepreneurs and organizations in the area to create "more opportunities" and address the problems of regional development.

One of the objectives is to change crops from traditional agriculture -such as wheat or corn- to other types of crops that are more profitable such as fruit trees. "There are many things to do, but the main thing is to generate employment, but a job with added value. Is that how it is done? Improving productivity: instead of planting wheat, planting fruit; instead of sending Curicó or Los Angeles packing a packing and export from here, "says Martín Arrau.

The proposal of the new administrative region will be primarily agricultural. For example, in the province of Punilla, Ñuble, is dedicated to an 44,68% to this sector compared to the national 11,32%. The above, due to the condition of its population, the possibility of taking advantage of new export conditions (specialized in the fruit area), access to renewable energy, water, land and other resources at more competitive prices than in other sectors of characteristics Similar. In this line, organic agriculture is also considered as a focus of productivity.
