Peru expects another big increase in blueberry exports

For the 2019 - 2020 season, blueberry shipments would be between the 110,000TM and 125,000TM, higher than the 78,000TM registered last season.

Peru seems to be ready to continue its explosive growth trend in the volume of blueberries soon, with a forecast that, if made, could make it the largest exporter in the world.

“We expect blueberry exports for 2019 - 2020 to be around 110,000 and 125,000 metric tons (MT),” said Miguel Bentín, vice president of ProArandanos to the Fresh Fruit portal.

If this figure is achieved, this would represent a leap over what was recorded last season (2018-2019) of 78,000 TM. In addition, it would be more than double the 48,000 TM exported in 2017-2018.

If carried out, Peru would probably surpass Chile as the world's leading exporter of fruit, since during the last two seasons, Chile has sent a little more 110,000 TM.

Bertín attributed the expected increase in Peru to higher plantation production and a high plantation rate.

“Blueberry farms that are managed reasonably well tend to produce fruit very quickly,” he said.

He added that although growth will continue, it is likely that it will not continue to be as exponential as in previous years.
