Biotechnology, knows the 5 most outstanding advances

The use of technology has led to a revolution in virtually everything we know today. Or at least that is the opinion of Katriona Guthrie-Honea, instructor of the biotechnology workshop at RobotiX and Researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA).

In his opinion, it is important that we all know the advances in technology applied to aspects of animal and human biology, because, in this way, it is possible that ways of generating sustainable and renewable products and techniques for our environment are known.

That is why the expert Guthrie-Honea explains what are the highlights in the advances of biotechnology in today's world, and how we have taken advantage of them.

  1. The transformation of food: Although for centuries we have developed consumables such as bread or yogurt with the help of microorganisms, it is currently made on a larger scale. This, Guthrie-Honea explains, allows processes to be more efficient and with better results.
  2. The use of vaccines: The first vaccine samples were obtained from animals, recalls Guthrie-Honea. However, the use of synthetic samples, ready to be injected, has opened an unsuspected path, but equally satisfactory. He emphasizes that trials are already being done so that vaccines can be ingested and that in this way he releases the agents that protect us from certain pathologies. He claims that these new methods make immunizers cheaper to move and easier to store.
  3. The creation of organic products: The term "ecology" has been around for the past decade. That is why more and more companies or organizations are betting on biotechnology to create more "friendly" materials with our environment. Guthrie-Honea.
  4. Water treatment: Water pollution is imminent, he warns. But despite the alarming figures, the expert says that biotechnology is a brief respite from the catastrophe. It states that certain microorganisms can be added in certain bodies of water. These, he explains, feed on the waste that contaminates the liquid and gradually cleans it. It exposes specific cases such as those of the River Thames, in London, or the River Seine, in Paris.
  5. GM crops: Katriona Guthrie-Honea comments that there is a misconception about the concept of transgenic foods. He argues that they are always associated with something artificial or harmful. It clarifies that it is rather the intervention of the hand of man in its purpose of creating better products through the alteration of a certain genetic composition. Remember that biotechnology is responsible, among other things, for golden rice, which is fortified with vitamin A. Guthrie-Honea says that we should stop demonizing this type of food, since they are more resistant to pests, more friendly with environment during its production and provide more nutrients to the body.
