The blueberry industry in Chile shipped 179 tons between July and September 2020

In addition, new strains were included in the shipments that "are going strong"

The Chilean Blueberry Committee presented the first "Crop Report" of the 2020-21 season, which reported that up to week 38 of this year, 179 tons of fresh blueberries had been shipped from the Coquimbo and Valparaíso regions, which represent the 72% and 24% of the shipments, respectively, destined for the Far East, which recorded the entry of 54% of the product, while the remaining 44% was divided between Europe and the Middle East. The information was released just as an investigation was beginning in the United States due to the explosive increase in imports of this fruit in that country.

Likewise, it was reported on the varietal turnover of blueberries in the industry, where the strains EB 9-2 and Jewell represented 18% of participation. They are followed by the Ventura and Emerald varieties with more than 13% participation each. In addition, new varieties were incorporated, such as Aurora, Farthing, First Blue and Rocío, among others, adding 19 new strains that have left the country.

For its part, the projection of exports for the current season is 111.500 tons, which is 2% higher than the previous period, keeping the figure for the 2018-20 campaign stable, after the incorporation of the new strains that "advance at a steady pace while their contribution to the varieties that today have lost ground is reduced” in the face of the superior quality of the new products, highlighted the committee's website.

The positive balance of the industry is related to the availability of water in the Valparaíso, Metropolitana and Libertador General Bernardo O'higgins regions, in the central area of the country, after the heavy rains and snows that accumulated in the mountain range, which It gives a break to the deficit that blueberries presented during 2019.
