Spain: Increasing volumes of Cantabrian blueberries

It was in the year 2005 when this product began to be profitable for commercialization, both in the national and international markets. The production of the Corniche Cantábrica is subject to meteorological changes, since this product is grown only outdoors. "This conditions us a lot in the volume of production, since we can not control and know for sure what we can achieve at the end of the campaign", Explains Fernando García, Principality Berries. However, this volume has been increasing close to an 20% year after year to make it possible to mark a goal close to one million kilos.

The blueberry market in the north of Spain is relatively recent and, therefore, small producers join together in cooperatives to offer customers the greatest possibilities. "In the last two years we have made two large investments. On the one hand, last year we introduced a packaging line, thanks to which we can now offer different packaging formats to customers. And, on the other hand, we have renovated the facilities this year", Explain from Principado Berries.

The blueberry production of the Corniche Cantábrica has found its place in the market, taking advantage of the end of Huelva's campaign, until approximately mid-October. "We do not agree with the production of the south of the country, but there are other countries that also have their own production at the same time as we, as is the case of England"Explains García. However, the demand is so high that there is no major problem in the marketing of the product. "Once your campaign ends, shorter than ours, we are left alone in the market until the overseas blueberries arrive".
