China: Cranberry production grows due to several factors

"Every year, the cranberry season begins in mid-March throughout the country and ends in mid-August. Compared to last season, blueberry production has grown by approximately 35%. The price is also somewhat higher than last year“, explains Gao Lei, from the company Rich Lands Farms, located in Jiangsu province.

"There are several reasons why the production of blueberries has increased. In the first place, the amount of rain and the scarcity of extreme weather conditions have favored the growth of blueberries. In addition, compared to other fruit, the economic benefits that are extracted in the blueberry market are a little higher, usually. In recent years, blueberries have been in great demand in the sale market and, due to this push, many farmers and businesses have grown to a certain degree. Lastly, the most advanced cultivation technologies and improvements in quality have resulted in a high yield of the plants".

"In comparison with bananas, apples and other fruits, blueberries are quite unusual. They contain high levels of anthocyanidin, which has the medical function of reducing cholesterol. Therefore, in recent years, the blueberry market has remained in a constant supply situation sufficient to meet the demand. So, although production has increased a bit this year, the price is still higher now than last year".
