"By growing in different regions, we can offer blueberries until July"

“The strawberry harvest in Morocco is already in full swing, which is an advantage over the Spanish product, which until now has only been available in small and consequently expensive quantities,” says Lars Grossmann, Managing Director of IMG Beerenfrucht. GmbH (Schwarmstedt, Germany). "We will be harvesting strawberries in the north of Morocco until the end of April." Supply and demand are good: "Since we are on the market so early, the demand is excellent."

The company has recently started cultivating more blueberry fields in southern Morocco and is already eagerly awaiting the first batches of berries to be harvested from those new sites later this month. “Until now, you will only find products from South America in the retail sector, but that will change soon. With our new surfaces we have a clear advantage, since we can harvest the blueberries much earlier than in past seasons." Quantities and demand are very good, says Grossmann. “By growing in different regions, we can probably supply the blueberry market through July.”

Since 2003, IMG Beerenfrucht GmbH has created numerous Goji berry plantations throughout Europe and, since 2009, Grossmann has been growing aronia berries in Germany, and for the last two years he and his associates have a large area dedicated exclusively to growing of red fruits of all kinds in Morocco. They are specialized in the cultivation of Goji berries, blueberries, currants, raspberries and strawberries. In addition to the cultivation, marketing and packaging of red fruits, Grossmann and its partners also offer advice to potential producers.

In Germany, the company grows aronia berries, which bloom at the end of April and are harvested in August. “The consumption of fresh aronia berries is not yet very popular, but we want to make them known this year. In recent years, its acreage has quadrupled in Lower Saxony; many of them are still intended exclusively for the processed food sector (jams, for example). But since there is a blueberry packer near our farm, this year we will have the opportunity to pack fresh aronia berries for retail."
