From the 10 of September, the city of Qujing in China witnessed a new edition of the International Blueberry Organization, IBO Summit 2017, an event that brought together experts from the global arandanero sector.
Several exhibitions were held offering an overview of this important fruit in the world. One of the exponents was Cort Brazelton, international business director of Fall's Creek Farm and Nursery.
Cort suggested the need to look for other sources of blueberry production in the world beyond highbush, indicating that production volumes from other sources, such as wild blueberries, are immense.
Brazelton reported that global growth forecasts for 2019 are estimated at 813.000 metric tons and 904.000 by 2021.
He added data on the current panorama of the sector such as, for example, that 75% of the world production of this fruit is concentrated in Chile, Canada and the United States, with 2016 being the first year that North America did not exceed 50% of production, passing from 52% to 48%.
It should be noted that China and Europe are the regions of the industry with the most active growth.
On the other hand, Yadong Li, a professor at Jilin Agricultural University and president of the Small Fruit Branch Society of Horticultural Society of China, predicted that for the 2026 the Chinese production of blueberries will surpass that of North America.
The planted area estimated in China would be from 70 thousand to 150 ml hectares.
