SAG Biobío announces Systems Approach to blueberry producers in the region

Currently, blueberry producers in the Biobío region, together with Ñuble, Maule and O'Higgins, can export their production in a fumigated fresh state, in origin or destination, with methyl bromide, to the United States, which affects the quality of the fruit and in the case of organic producers means that they lose that condition product of this fumigation.

This morning the Biobío Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) met with blueberry producers in the region, an opportunity in which he released the Systems Approach that is being evaluated by the United States Department of Agriculture to authorize the export of blueberries from free or regulated properties outside the moth control area of the vine cluster or Lobesia botrana from the Biobío and Ñuble regions.

In this regard, the Seremi of Agriculture of Biobío, Francisco Lagos, said that “this is important news for the fruit sector in our region. The Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, has worked for the United States to approve this Systems Approach, so we must be prepared to meet the requirements established to export fresh blueberries to that market this season, so it is important that producers who can opt for the Systems Approach know the work plan that they must implement in their gardens ”.

For his part, the Regional Director of the SAG of Biobío, Iván Ramírez, indicated that “the System Approach will allow the properties that are not in the pest control area Lobesia botrana,, they can export their production without the need to spray the fruit, which will benefit 93 blueberry producers, from a universe of 133 producers in the region. ”

While the Executive Director of the Blueberry Committee, Andrés Armstromg, explained that “since the end of the year 2013 the blueberry producers of the Biobío region, together with Ñuble, Maule and O'Higgins can export their production in the fresh state to the United States fumigated, in origin or destination, with methyl bromide, which affects the quality of the fruit and in the case of organic producers leads them to lose that condition product of this fumigation ”.

The System Approach is a set of pest risk management measures that guarantee the conditions imposed by the United States market for the importation of blueberries that occur in our country in those areas free of the pest Lobesia botrana, for the Biobío and Ñuble regions.

To access the Systems Approach, blueberry producers who are not in the pest control area must register with the SAG Agricultural Registration System (SRA), install traps for pest monitoring through an authorized company by SAG before August 30, whose list is available on the website www.sag.cl; not having sexual confusion emitters installed, elimination of deformed or defective fruit in the packaging process, SAG / USDA Site inspection, storage at 2 ° C for 10 days for shipping by sea or air.

The grapevine moth or Lobesia botrana It was first detected in our country in the area of Linderos, Metropolitan Region. The plague, originating in Europe, attacks the vineyards, its larva causes direct damage by feeding on the clusters, producing a rot and dehydration of the berries, a situation that reduces the yields of the vines.

Due to the serious phytosanitary damage that this insect produces to the agricultural sector, SAG declared it under mandatory control by means of Resolution No. 5.916 of 2016 modified by Resolution No. 3.213 of the 25 of May 2017.
