Biobío ports: Alternatives for Argentine exports to Asia

Chilean ports in the Biobío region, such as the terminals of Puerto Coronel, San Vicente International Terminal (SVTI) and DP World Lirquén, have become a logistics alternative for Argentine producers and entrepreneurs interested in projecting towards the Asian market.

Rodrigo Schilling, commercial manager of Puerto Coronel, reported that “the Argentine cargo is mostly fruit and at the end of the first semester it reached the 1.200 containers, being in line with the projected. Although the fruit production of the Valley of Neuquén has been falling for several years due to internal economic factors, exports that leave through Chilean ports are growing steadily because Argentina is betting heavily on the Asian market, especially China. ” he stressed.

According to Gloria Romero, commercial manager of SVTI, during the 2018 year, the ports of the Biobío region managed to transfer 2.500 containers from Argentina, while so far this year, the figure already exceeds 3.000.

In relation to his prospects of continuing to consolidate this type of services for Argentine cargo, he stressed that “SVTI is projected as a real alternative and with comparative advantages over other ports. We have invested in the latest generation infrastructure that allows us to offer a faster, more efficient and safer service ”. In addition, he indicated that the terminal - located in the Bay of San Vicente - has an important infrastructure that allows it to serve both dry and reefer cargo, to which is added the training of its personnel to consolidate different cargo formats.

From DP World Lirquén, they have reported that the transit time they offer for Argentine cargoes destined for Asia is less than they have us leaving the ports of Argentina.

From the port authorities they have highlighted the role of regional authorities “as engines to generate conditions of efficiency and reliability in the export and import processes, which allows us us as a region to be able to add value to the foreign trade logistics chain ”.
