Peruvian producers will attend Italy looking for new genetics
The complex blueberry season that the Peruvian industry has had to face, due to the different impacts that the El Niño meteorological phenomenon has caused on agriculture, has shown that certain varieties are more prepared to face these unforeseen climatic events, without affecting yields and fruit quality.
El Niño caused significant flooding in Peruvian fields, severely damaging agricultural activity. Later, the same phenomenon brought with it high temperatures, which affected the physiology of blueberries and other crops, damaging yields per plant and altering their metabolism, which has resulted in a significant shortage of Peruvian fruit in world markets.

The damages, however, have been very different depending on the regions and, above all, according to the different varieties, which have had variable behavior with respect to the threat. In fact, the Ventura and Biloxi varieties have been among those affected, and unfortunately it is on which a large percentage of Peruvian production is based. On the other hand, new varieties have shown to have better aptitudes against these new scenarios.
Due to this, Peruvian producers of blueberries and other berries are beginning to look for new genetics as a solution to different environmental challenges and also as a response to the demand for high competitive standards imposed by consumers and the global fruit market.
