Minister of Agriculture declares agricultural emergency zone due to water shortage for the O'Higgins region

The declaration, which is applied by the Ministry of Agriculture, will help to free up resources to support farmers and producers affected by the drought.

The Minister of Agriculture, Antonio Walker announced the declaration of agricultural emergency due to water scarcity for all the communes of the O'Higgins region and said “that we are going to contribute as fresh resources to the region the sum of $ 1.900 million, a part of the the regional government contributes and $ 800 millions are contributed by the Ministry of Agriculture and the idea is not to leave the 3 alone a thousand farmers who are having a bad time.

The central zone of Chile is experiencing one of the most important droughts of the last 60 years, with a rainfall deficit of 70% and the Government through the Ministry of Agriculture has declared an agricultural emergency in the regions of Coquimbo, Valparaíso and O 'Higgins, mainly, in order to deliver fodder for animals, remedies and all the supplies that are necessary to meet the drink for human consumption.

“After the agricultural emergency request was raised, we proceeded to make a cadastre in the 33 communes of the region and the truth is that we are going through a very critical situation in O'Higgins, especially in the coastal dry land, as well that we have signed the agricultural emergency resolution due to water shortages requested by the mayor, in order to activate the emergency resources, ”said Minister Walker.

For his part, the Mayor of the O'Higgins region, Juan Manuel Masferrer stressed that “an important investment from the regional government will go to farmers and non-INDAP users who meet the aid requirements. Resources will also be delivered through INDAP for people who are users of this service. This crystallizes with the delivery of animal fodder, photovoltaic water pumps and water harvesters. And we have a climate change program that has to do with pond purchases and water harvesting. ”

“I want to thank the Minister and the Ministry for receiving our request quickly, I think it is essential that these resources be executed quickly because we are still on time. And these are the first measures and we will continue working, because we will not leave our farmers alone. The first measures will be for the coastal dry land, because they are the first communes affected, but the emergency is for all the communes in the region, ”Masferrer added.
