India opens its market to avocados, nuts and Chilean blueberries

At the closing of the fifth version of ChileWeek in China, the Minister of Agriculture, Antonio Walker, announced that the Indian market unlocked the entry of Chilean avocados, walnuts and blueberries. This, after seven years of intense negotiations.

The Secretary of State explained that India eliminated the obligation to spray Chilean fruit with methyl bromide, which will allow products exported from our country not to be damaged as a result of this process.

“This is very good news for Chilean producers, we thought this process would last much longer, but leaving aside methyl bromide we can reach this market using the cold chain and phosphine that is much more friendly with the environment ambient. Our goal is to continue expanding our country's export offer so that Chilean agriculture continues to grow and every day more exporters join the international markets. We want to make India what we have done in China, ”said Minister Walker.

For his part, from the export sector, Ronald Bown, President of ASOEX, indicated: “We receive this news with great enthusiasm. We have been working for a long time with the Chilean Ministry of Agriculture, Our Embassy in India, the Foreign Ministry and Former President Eduardo Frei in his capacity as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary for the Asia-Pacific region, to achieve inspection for our blueberries and avocados, thus avoiding subjecting them to fumigation that damaged their condition and made their export impossible ”.

Exports

Chile currently exports to India about US $ 180 million, well below what we sent to China, "thinking that it is a destination of more than 1.200 million inhabitants," Minister Walker added.

According to ASOEX statistics, during the 2018-2019 season, Chile has sent 51.571 tons of fresh fruits to India. Of this amount, 82,3% correspond to apples, 15,9% kiwis, 1% table grapes, 0,4% plums and 0,2% cherries.
