«Cherry cultivation in Peru will be successful»
The last edition of Fruit Logistica in Germany was the setting chosen by Peru to share internationally – and officially – that it is about to enter the cherry business.
The first research on this fruit in the country dates back to before 2018, by companies such as Viveros El Tambo, while at the level of agro-industrial companies, Complejo Agroindustrial Beta would be "the only one that is doing tests," Promperú reported to Gestion.pe. However, according to information that the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa) shared with the media, in 2022 up to 11 phytosanitary permits were issued for the importation of cherry propagation material, mainly from Chile.
In dialogue with Gestion.pe, Francisco Moraga, general manager of Viveros El Tambo in Peru, reported that in November of this year, after almost five years of study, they will deliver their first batch of cherry seedlings, ready to plant, to the companies with which they have a relationship. commercial alliance, in order to verify the behavior of the berry in different areas of the country.
"Everything is still at the experimental level but we hope that the commercial trial will begin in 2024. The challenge is not only for the plant to adapt, but for the campaign in Peru to begin before November and December, which is the campaign in Chile, the first world cherry exporter," he said.
In recent years, the company has dedicated itself to carrying out adaptation studies on five patented cherry varieties. For this year they hope to obtain the permits to import rootstocks, which would allow them to obtain results in less time. “The ideal is to be able to grow in areas that are cold in winter and hot in spring. Cherry cultivation in Peru will be successful, it takes time, like blueberries and grapes”, he indicated.
In the new edition of International Blueberry Consulting Seminar, which will be held on the days 08 there 09 de Marzo in the dependencies of the Lima Convention Center (LCC), Cherry cultivation will be addressed in the talk "New varieties of Cherry Trees: Experience in Chile, opportunities and challenges for Peru", by the Product Manager of ANA Chile, Lorena Pinto.
