Chile increases blueberry exports by 92%

The latest Crop and Export report, made by the Blueberry Committee of Chile, announced positive numbers for the country.

This, despite the social crisis affecting Chile since Friday 18 in October, as export volumes with respect to the same week of the previous year increased considerably.

"Up to 42 week, 901 tons of blueberries have been exported, 92% more than the same week of the previous season," the report said.

However, the document assumes that the season is developing "with some difficulty in the midst of the social crisis affecting the country."

Air and sea shipments

The report said that "air shipments have an 72% of volume." The rest was sent by sea, mainly through the port of San Antonio.

So far, 231 tons correspond to organic blueberries; which, according to the report, implies an increase of 130% compared to the organic volumes of the previous season.

"This week (43) could be more critical in terms of logistics for exports, due to the registered unemployment in some seaports and the curfew in different cities of the country," the report announced.

However, the effects are not expected to be greater, because "there is good news that indicates a certain return to normalcy."

This, according to the report, due to the decrease in curfew hours and the partial operation of the port, after stoppages.

"Despite the above, blueberry exports would not have been mostly affected," the report said.

The above, because volumes are still low and because air shipments worked relatively normally.

The port of Valparaíso had no major problems and, according to the report, they expect normal operation in San Antonio in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, temperatures have increased in recent weeks, favoring crops. In this way, a "good ripening of the fruit and harvest progress in the north of the country (Coquimbo and Valparaíso) are expected, mainly with early varieties such as Jewel, Rocío and Emerald among others."
