ADEX: Number of products in the agro-export basket grew 3.9%

Between 2019 and 2023 the number of products in the chain agroexporter (traditional and non-traditional) went from 620 to 644, reflecting an increase of 3.9%, while markets experienced a decrease of 4.1%, reported the Agro-Export Management of the Exporters Association (ADEX).

It was the result of a series of factors such as the economic behavior of the main trading partners, the conditions of the national productive sector, the climate, investments and the international price of the main products, among others.

Last year the product ranking was led by grapes, blueberries, avocados, non-decaffeinated coffee, fresh asparagus, mangoes, other preparations used for animal feed, cocoa beans, citrus fruits and dried paprika.

The evolution of others that have not yet recorded significant amounts was also observed, such as spinach, other mushrooms, shelled peanuts, cocoa fat and oil, sunflower oil, walnut nuts, cumin seeds and peanut oil. .

The Agro-Export Manager of the union, Claudia Solano Oré, expressed her concern about the future of this activity that is characterized by its contribution to the treasury, impact on the decentralization of the country and generation of jobs.

He recalled that previously and thanks to the commercial opening and the arrival of investments as a result of Law No. 27360, that sector (agribusiness) achieved growth of 29% in 2011, 28% in 2004 and 26% in 2005 and 2007, but in recent years a slowdown has been observed that will have effects in the short term.

“Peru positioned itself as a leading global supplier of blueberries, grapes, quinoa, fresh asparagus and avocados. We must advance the pending agenda so as not to lose the spaces gained,” she emphasized.

In detail

According to figures from the ADEX Data Trade Commercial Intelligence System, primary agricultural shipments totaled close to USD 2023 million in 969, experiencing a contraction of -28.2% in relation to 2022 (USD 1351 million).

Its main item was coffee without decaffeination or roasting with USD 827 million, reflecting a drop of -32.9% and accumulating 85.4% of the total. They were followed by other refined cane and beet sugars in solid state and cane molasses. Its leading markets were the US and Germany, jointly concentrating 44.6%.

For their part, agroindustrial shipments reached USD 9211 million, showing an increase of 9.1% compared to 2022 (USD 8443 million). Its most important products were grapes (29.7%), blueberries (27%) and avocados (9%), which together accounted for 47.6% of the total non-traditional agriculture.

The offer arrived primarily to the United States (USD 3351 million) with a participation of 36.4% and an evolution of 9.5%, followed by the Netherlands, Spain, Chile, China, Ecuador, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Hong Kong and Colombia. among others.

In order to promote the agro-exportable offer in more destinations, the Agro-export Management of ADEX presented a work agenda that includes events such as the 22nd edition of the Agro-exporter Lunch, to be held on April 25, in which specialized information on new trends, analysis of evolution and projections.

Other events will be the 'IV Convention of Andean Grains' (July), 'IV Cocoa and Chocolate Cocktail' (July), 2nd International Passiflora Congress of Peru (August) and Capsicum Business Meeting (September).

I also know will promote –together with public entities– the attendance of agro-exporters at several fairs, including Thaifex – Anuga Asia in Thailand (May) and Seoul Food & Hotel in South Korea (June); In addition, the Trade Mission to Southeast Asia in Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand (May) and another mission to the Nordic countries of Denmark, Sweden and Poland (October).
